Violent Exposure
|
When Suzanne Crawford is found stabbed to death and her husband Connor is discovered to be missing, it looks like a tragic case of domestic violence to Detective Ella Marconi. But as the investigation progresses, it becomes clear that all is not as it seems. Why is there no record of Connor Crawford beyond a few years ago? Why has a teenager who worked for the pair gone missing too? Is trainee paramedic Aidan Simpson telling the truth about his involvement? And above all, what was the secret Suzanne knew Connor was keeping at all costs – even from her? As Ella begins to build a picture of the Crawfords' fractured lives, things around her are deteriorating. Her relationship with a fellow officer is hanging by a thread and her parents seem to be keeping secrets of their own. But Ella only has time for the job she loves, and she knows she has to see her way through the tangled web of deceit and lies to get at the truth – before it's too late. Read the first chapter . . . Author's note. Violent Exposure is Katherine's fourth book, and she says that writing it was something of a rollercoaster ride. 'This is really nothing new--each book I've written feels like that, and author friends have told me they go through similar swings of emotion as they work. Generally it involves the almost-daily ups and downs associated with writing itself: some days you feel your work is wonderful, some days it's a pile of dog-sick, but all you can do is hold on tight and keep going. 'In addition to that, however, I also find myself mentally revisiting some of my worst times as a paramedic. It is still cathartic to write about the things I went through, but at a distance, as I mould them to suit the story and the characters. On the up side with this book was the character of Aidan the trainee. In my fifteen years on the job I trained a number of junior staff so want to stress right now that he is based on none of them! He was lots of fun to write, as I'm sure you'll see when you read even just the excerpt.' |
Reviews.
"... arguably the best novel by former paramedic and talented crime author Katherine Howell .... With adultery, secrets, murders and lies in the mix, the borders between business and personal and law and life blurred, and detective Marconi left trying to find an 'invisible' murderer, readers will need to strap themselves in for an exhilarating read. Fast-paced, gutsy and intriguing, Violent Exposure will appeal primarily to female fans of both detective and forensic investigation stories, and can be read alone or as part of this very readable series. 4 stars." Australian Bookseller and Publisher.
"A thrilling mystery that will leave you gasping." Cairns Sun.
"An enjoyable dose of action, intrigue and suspense." Canberra Times.

"Violent Exposure is a great book, with twists and turns, detective and forensic investigation and heaps of great characters. It is a real joy to read." Melbourne Times
