Author's note. Violent Exposure is Katherine's fourth book, and she says that writing it was something of a rollercoaster ride. 'This is really nothing new--each book I've written feels like that, and author friends have told me they go through similar swings of emotion as they work. Generally it involves the almost-daily ups and downs associated with writing itself: some days you feel your work is wonderful, some days it's a pile of dog-sick, but all you can do is hold on tight and keep going. 'In addition to that, however, I also find myself mentally revisiting some of my worst times as a paramedic. It is still cathartic to write about the things I went through, but at a distance, as I mould them to suit the story and the characters. On the up side with this book was the character of Aidan the trainee. In my fifteen years on the job I trained a number of junior staff so want to stress right now that he is based on none of them! He was lots of fun to write, as I'm sure you'll see when you read even just the excerpt.' |
