take the memories with you

REPURPOSED SADDLE BAGS

Imagine a bag built from the leather of your beloved retired saddle, the straps from your heart horse's bridle and reins; each scratch, crease, and mark on the leather telling your shared story ...

Here at Satchel and Co we love transforming precious saddles into gorgeous bags, making it possible for you to carry those special memories with you every day.

The process starts when you send us your saddle, and we take it carefully apart, assessing the state of every piece. We clean and condition the leather, restoring the oils and rejuvenating the texture and sheen. Next we cut the leather to the right size and shape, then stitch the pieces together using the traditional saddle stitch. Where necessary we'll use pieces of new leather but we keep this to a minimum. We line the bag with super soft roo leather, and add a slip-in internal pocket.  Elements of your tack such as stirrup leathers and reins are repurposed into straps, while buckles, dees, clips, and other hardware are integrated wherever possible. (If you don't have these things, no worries, we'll use some from our stock of salvaged parts.)

The final product is a bespoke bag that is not only practical and stylish but also a real connection to your riding history. It’s more than just a bag; it’s a tribute to the adventures you've shared with your beloved horse. Where possible we also create a few smaller items, such as card wallets and keyrings, using the leftovers from saddle seat, panels, and bridle pieces, and include these as a thank you gift. To discuss your custom bag and arrange shipping, please contact Katherine directly.

The Bellinger, shown below, is crafted from the outer saddle flaps, each piece showing the unique wear patterns. The gusset and flap are constructed from either stunning new full-grain leather or repurposed saddle flaps or seats, while the shoulder strap is made from salvaged reins or stirrup leathers. The bag's flap is secured by a rare earth neodymium magnet, strong enough to function through the sturdy saddle leather. The Bellinger measures 25 x 20 x 9 cm and is priced at $295, with a $20 flat rate for registered post within Australia (or you can drop off and pick up from our workshop in Narangba, QLD).

If you'd prefer something smaller, check out our Pony series - press-stud pouches made from the seats of vintage saddles. Measuring 11 x 7.5 cm, these are the perfect size for a few cards and a bit of cash. Or our Colt cardholders - 9 x 7 cm, made from leather salvaged from anywhere on the saddle giving them a unique look, and with three slip-in pockets. Both the Pony and the Colt are $25, plus $10 shipping.
